CNN —One of the earliest books in existence is expected to fetch upwards of $2.6m when it goes up for auction later this year. The Crosby-Schøyen Codex, which was written in Coptic on papyrus in Egypt, is the earliest Christian liturgical book, according to the international auction house Christie’s, which will be holding the sale in London on June 11. Carbon dating suggests the book dates back to sometime between the middle of the 3rd and 4th centuries. One of the earliest witnesses to the spread of Christianity, the codex features the first epistle of Peter and the Book of Jonah. As such, the codex is the oldest known book in private hands.

They were there to talk about classified documents, but somehow President Biden’s mind had turned to Mongolia. Something about being handed a bow and arrow during a visit and embarrassing his host. “Pure luck, I hit the goddamn target,” Mr. Biden recalled. Mr. Biden described giving an oration in law school on a case he had not read and lying his way into an exclusive club in Delaware. He recounted his time with President Barack Obama and trying to “save his ass” from manipulative generals.

The best theatrical songwriting barely requires a theater. Which is a good thing when so many shows close so quickly. Of the 16 musicals that opened on Broadway in 2023, only four are still running. Like loved ones who leave behind scrapbooks or tchotchkes, many shows leave souvenirs of themselves in the form of cast albums. Below, my highly subjective ranking of a selection of musicals that released cast albums.

Photo: Getty Images/iStockphotoJohannes Gutenberg ’s printing press revolutionized life in the 15th century, making it possible for ideas to travel around the world at previously unimaginable speeds and creating huge gains for mankind. Gutenberg tried to keep his technique a secret, but a disgruntled former investor, Johann Fust , soon replicated his device. Fust launched his own press and poached Gutenberg’s top techie, Peter Schoeffer . Imagine if the printing press had been kept secret and controlled by one company, or confined within one nation. It’s an imperfect analogy, but it offers a useful way to frame the current debate around artificial intelligence.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsFRANKFURT, Aug 24 (Reuters) - German property developer Gerch said on Thursday it had filed an application for restructuring proceedings with a local court, the latest real estate firm to run into financial trouble as the sector suffers its biggest crisis in decades. Gerch said the move affected four of the firm's units and that the Duesseldorf court had ordered provisional self-administration. Mathias Duesterdick, CEO of Gerch, last month told Reuters the turn of events in the sector was worrying and predicted difficulties for developers. The musical, written by Scott Brown and Anthony King, began its life in the comedy world, at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, where King was the artistic director, and then was further developed at the New York Musical Festival. The director will be Alex Timbers, who also directed the 2006 Off Broadway production; Timbers later won a Tony Award for directing “Moulin Rouge!,” and he has also worked in comedy, including as the director of “Oh, Hello” on Broadway. “I love this show, and it gets seen and performed all over the world, but isn’t really known in New York,” Timbers said. “Broadway is rebounding, and it is due for an even bigger rebound,” Gad said. And more than anything, I think that people miss laughing.”

New calculations suggest that 1.7 billion T. rexes lived on Earth from 65.5-68 million years ago. This dichotomy between how many T. rexes lived and how few fossils we have of them shows us just how rare fossilization is and how much more we have to learn about these majestic creatures. Warpaintcobra/Getty ImagesMarshall was the lead author of an earlier study that estimated 2.5 billion T. rexes once roamed Earth. Of the roughly 1.7 billion, or so, T. rexes who roamed our planet, scientists have only uncovered a few hundred fossils, equating to fewer than 100 total dinosaurs. Despite their prime conditions for fossilization, if Giebeler's calculations are correct, scientists have only found about 0.0000002% of the T. rex that lived on Earth.

Opinion | How Should We Teach Kids to Read?

Those letter patterns were words I already knew but had never read. From that day to this I read everything, from the label on the back of a ketchup bottle to Seamus Heaney’s poetry. Patricia McLainOlympia, Wash.To the Editor:Understanding the history of the English language is essential to understanding how to teach reading. We, the teachers, must recognize the history of our spelling system in order to teach reading. There is no one way to teach an American child that “seen” and “scene” are pronounced the same, but “seen” and “been” are not.
Nowadays, the promise of social media as a unifying force for good has all but collapsed, and Zuckerberg is slashing thousands of jobs after his company's rocky pivot to the metaverse. Much like social media in 2012, the AI industry is standing on the precipice of immense change. And as Altman and his cohort charge ahead, AI could fundamentally reshape our economy and lives even more than social media. If social media helped expose the worst impulses of humanity on a mass scale, generative AI could be a turbocharger that accelerates the spread of our faults. Social media amplified society's issues, as Wooldridge puts it.
The technology that printed the Gutenberg Bible in 1455 made abstract human thought communicable generally and rapidly. Whereas the printing press caused a profusion of modern human thought, the new technology achieves its distillation and elaboration. In the process, it creates a gap between human knowledge and human understanding. The new technology is known as generative artificial intelligence; GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer. As its capacities become broader, they will redefine human knowledge, accelerate changes in the fabric of our reality, and reorganize politics and society.
AI startup Jasper hosted what it claims was the first conference dedicated to generative AI. The mood was reminiscent of the hype around crypto, but attendees say generative AI is here to stay. Thomas Maxwell/InsiderInsiders say generative AI is not just a fadGenerative AI has already run into some road bumps. Anthropic's Amodei said that consumers, businesses, and developers alike are moving at "record speeds" to adopt generative AI. Thomas Maxwell/InsiderWhat's different with generative AI is that large language models have been quietly in development for some time, , executives said.
PUEBLA, Mexico — It is, according to UNESCO, the oldest public library in the Americas, tucked away from the street front at a cultural center in the historic heart of this Mexican city. “Everything that was imagined at that time is in the library,” said Juan Fernández del Campo, the library’s current manager. Palafox’s passion for books is evident in a quote from him, written on a mosaic outside the library. This was not the time for Mexico to raise its wings toward freedom of thought,” the library manager said. The library reopened in 2002; two years later it was added by UNESCO to its Memory of the World Register.
